Holocaust Document Portugal Protection Letter 1944 Hungary Signed
Original protection letter (Provisionary Passport, Schutz-Pass) issued by the Portuguese Consulate of Budapest during the Holocaust, 25 August 1944. Signed by the consul.
These rare documents have saved many lives during the Holocaust in Hungary. Similar to those issued by the Swedish and Swiss embassies, they have certified that the owner has a valid passport and hence is to be regarded as a foreign citizen under protection. The Embassy of Portugal was the representative of Brazil in Hungary as well. Even though they were issued with the purpose of saving Jewish lives and not to let them actually travel to Portugal or Brazil, these countries were preparing to welcome Jews from Budapest provided that their travel is possible. The Portuguese passport was limited to 500 people, in fact the Embassy gave out around 700 such documents. This protection letter is probably signed by Pedro Tovar de Lemos consul.
This protection letter was issued to Mrs. Peto Robert Schonfeld Erzsebet, sealed and signed by the Embassy. In December 1944 its validity was extended  with another three months.
